Dolphin Jewelry

"And when the day comes that we can communicate intelligently with dolphins, they may introduce us to the concept of survival without aggression, and the true joy of living, which at present eludes us. In that circumstance what they have to teach us would be infinitely more valuable than anything we could offer them in exchange." -- Horace Dobbs

First of all, let's take a look at the rationale behind dolphin jewelry. What makes dolphins so attractive as jewelry motifs? Moreover, what would make them so important as to deserve a second look by jewelry-lovers, especially the socially conscientious?

Well, for one thing -- if there is any ocean-dwelling creature that is said to be the smartest and most compassionate – it is the dolphin. Dolphins have been known to guide stranded seafarers to dry land, and converse intelligently in a language that’s all their own. Scientists have been attempting to study the way dolphins communicate, and there is increasing evidence that dolphins have their own complex language. Dolphins are also the only ocean mammals that mate for recreation, and are closest to humans in this respect.

Dolphins are also among the most graceful of sea creatures, moving smoothly and effortlessly through the turbulent waves, turning backflips in the air with all the carefree air of a human child showing off a somersault. After all, who has never felt anything but goodwill and affection for Flipper, that most beloved of all celebrity dolphins?

But there is a sad twist to the dolphins' story. Believe it or not, some species of dolphins are fast becoming an endangered species. Pierce Brosnan (James Bond 007), Dean Anderson (StarGate, McGyver) and Martin Sheen (West Wing) have been known to support causes that save dolphins from being killed for sport or commercial purposes. Pollution is driving many dolphins to flee their ocean sanctuaries, and there have been stories of dolphins being beached while fleeing desperately from nuclear testing grounds or oil spills.

Wearing dolphin jewelry may not directly save the lives of dolphins, but it will help other people become more aware of the situation surrounding these intelligent creatures. But most importantly, dolphin jewelry continues to be elegant and eye-catching through the years. It represents a serene, fun-loving beauty that perseveres despite harsh trials.

Diamonds - How to test if they are Real or Fake?

A diamond is a girl’s best friend! It is a beauty and unique nature makes it easy to admire. Diamond purchasing is a great task and an exciting pleasure. There are various types of diamonds so when buying real diamonds, one should learn about fake diamonds so that you will be able to distinguish between the fake vs. real diamond. Nowadays the best fake diamond is in great demand. Here are some of the simple solutions or the methods that will enable you to find out the difference between the fake vs. real diamond. The best way to know about the precious diamond is to acquire knowledge from a diamond professional. If possible take the diamond along with you to the shop and get all the details from the jeweler. The best fake diamond looks so similar to the real diamond that even a professional diamond jeweler may get confused and may have hard time to finding out whether it is a fake or the real diamond. In case you are not satisfied with the views regarding the real diamond from the professional, here is a way to find out which is a real diamond and which is a fake diamond.

The first method is to check the diamond with the help of diamond tester as it will help you to differentiate between real diamond and best fake diamond. It is an electronic tester that can check all the diamonds except the moissanite stone for which the diamond tester is not reliable. The best fake diamond is the cubic zirconia and the weight of this diamond is around 50% more than a real diamond of the same size and shape. This weighing test also can find out the difference between fake vs. real diamond.

Another method for checking the best fake diamond is the transparency test in which the diamond is placed up side down on the news paper and if the written matter from the newspaper is legible then be sure that the diamond is not the real one and it can be a best fake diamond. One of the disadvantages of this method is that some of the stones may appear to be a real diamond due its fine cutting. In this case, one needs to be sure about the cutting methods of the stones. This method is very common and enables you to find the real diamond from the best fake diamond.

The third method that helps you to differentiate between fake vs. real diamond is the fog test. Hold the stone or the diamond and blow some air from your mouth on to the stone, if the fog appears on the stone and stays there for next few seconds then it shows that the stone is a best fake diamond because in case of a real diamond, the heat disappears instantly. The oily layers and dirt on the stone might create some problems to differentiate fake vs. real diamond. Thus, before carrying out a test for best fake diamond, clean its surface properly.

The ultra violet test is another method that will enable you to find out the real diamond from the best fake diamond. The real diamond projects blue color light if put under the ultra violet light or the black color. There are two options, if the blue light does not appear, it can be best fake diamond or can be a high quality diamond.

All of the above tests can satisfy all the test conditions to differentiate between a best fake diamond and the real diamond.

Diamond Jewelry - Wedding Rings

Diamond wedding rings are no longer just for women. Many grooms today choose to purchase a man's diamond wedding ring to match the bride's. Still others enjoy the social status that comes with wearing a diamond wedding band. Purchasing a diamond wedding ring means that the groom must consider not only the material and design of the ring, but also the quality of the diamonds.

Although often not considered to be as important as the diamonds in the bride's engagement and wedding rings, the groom's diamonds should also be purchased with care. The man should take the same "4 Cs" into consideration: carat weight, clarity, color, and cut.

A carat is exactly 200 milligrams, but very few men's bands will sport a diamond of this size. Most bands will instead have several smaller diamonds that may of may not equal one full carat. A full carat is also equal to 100 points, so a jeweler may refer to a ring as having several 10 point diamonds (each of which would be equal to one tenth of a carat).

While the clarity of a diamond is often considered the least important of the 4 Cs, it is still a key consideration in your diamond purchase. The clarity of a diamond measures the number and extent of the flaws in the diamond. For the most part, a more valuable diamond will have fewer flaws. It is extremely rare that you will find a completely flawless diamond; only a couple hundred "FL" diamonds are produced a year. Although there are several grading systems used to determine a diamond's clarity, the Gemological Institute of America's (GIA) score is by far the most popular. It ranks diamonds as Flawless (FL), Internally Flawless (IF), Very Very Slightly Included (VVS), Very Slightly Included (VS), Slightly Included (SI), and Included (I).  (Note: “inclusions” are slight specks, cracks, or other flaws in a diamond).  These ranks are not subjective; the scale has extremely specific criteria that are used to differentiate between the grades.

The color of the stone, referring to how yellow the stone is, can also be graded on a GIA scale. An ideal diamond is completely colorless, being ranked as a D. The alphabetical scale ranks nearly colorless stones as I and J , increasingly yellow beginning with M/N, and a Z is a completely yellow stone. The average color for engagement diamonds in the United States is G to H.

The cut of a diamond is possibly the most confusing of the "4 Cs," since it can refer to the cutting style, the shape of the stone (round, square, heart-shaped, etc), its proportions, or the workmanship and the diamond-cutting process. The brilliant round cut is the most common cut for diamond engagement rings and wedding bands.

How to Select Jewelry?

Selecting jewelry isn't hard, when you can see it and touch it. However when you purchase jewelry wholesale, you often won't have this opportunity before making a purchase, since most of these purchases are made online or through mail order. This makes the selection process a bit harder.

Start by reading all of the information that is supplied. Make sure that words like 'gold plated' or
'faux' are not used if you are looking for genuine pieces. Contact the company and ask for more
information if you are unsure about anything that you are reading as well. Make sure you are getting wholesale prices. Look for similar pieces at the online jewelry stores, or even at your local jewelry stores, and compare the prices. The wholesale price should be much lower.
Also check the refund and exchange policy of the business you are planning to purchase from. Make sure that there is a 'no questions asked' money back guarantee, or the offer of a 100% refund if you are not satisfied. If there is no refund policy, there should be no deal! You can find other jewelry wholesale from companies that do offer refunds and exchanges.

Black Hills Gold Jewelry

Black Hills gold really gets the blood pumping in Clara Bennett, Ida Barnes and Tara Sanchez of Riverside, California. This unique gold is usually crafted into traditional designs that features yellow, rose and green gold molded into leaves and grape clusters.

The Black Hills Goldrush

The Black Hills were part of the Sioux reservation. When gold was discovered there, people like Fred Manuel, F.L. Thorpe, Potato Creek Johnny, E.O. Lampinen, Ivan Landstrom and Samuel Fields rushed there, disregarding the treaty with the Sioux. The Black Hills Goldrush boom really started in 1874. At first, the gold miners found loose gold in the dirt and in the riverbeds that is known as placer gold, or gold that has eroded from somewhere else. Places like Custer and Ruby Basin rapidly became small cities. There were individuals who believed there had to be a mother lode went on a search for the location of the vein of gold running through the rock, and when they found it, they named the resulting mine the ?Homestake.? The Homestake mine produced an unbelievable amount of gold? perhaps even ten percent of the world?s gold supply. It ultimately closed in 2001.

The Unique Production of Black Hills Gold

The fashioning of Black Hills gold is as peculiar as its history. Utilizing bars of pure 24 karat gold, silver and copper, the only criteria for the resulting work to be called ?Black Hills Gold? is that the ring or bracelet be made in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The materials can be mined anywhere - even Afghanistan, Chad or Vanuatu.
The gold is united with copper to compose the 12 karat rose gold, and silver is compounded with the gold to produce the 12 karat green gold. The resulting colors of gold are then rolled to varying thicknesses to be made into different strains of jewelry. Each discrete piece is stamped from the thin sheet using dies. The discrete pieces are then primed to made into earrings using pre-cast bases.
The bases are first burnished, either by hand or tumbling. When the bases are polished to a nice shine, the individual parts are either hand-soldered onto the base or they are attached in a soldering oven with several other pieces at the same time. After soldering, the pieces are dipped into a mild acid bath before going through inspection to see if they meet the precise standards for Black Hills gold. When a piece passes inspection, it is electroplated with 24 karat gold. A process called wriggling is then employed to remove the electroplated gold from the rose and green colored parts. This makes a textured or frosty surface to the jewelry. Every leaf vein is then hand engraved so it catches the light.
After another round of shining, the finished piece is ready for use. If it needs a gemstone it is sent to the stone setter for mounting.

Traditional Styles

The traditional variety of Black Hills gold jewelry was made by French goldsmith, Henri LeBeau in the late 1800s. He stated he had dreamed of the pattern when he passed out from thirst and starvation. His designis a mixture of green and rose colored grape leaves, along with grapes and gold vines. Since he first designed this, the grape leaf design has adorned pendants, rings, bracelets and even watch bands in varying designs. It is such a memorable design that one only has to get a glimpse of it to see that it is a Black Hills gold design.

Gold Jewelry Chains

Gold has throughout history been a sign of wealth and status, and throughout the ages, people have flashed their gold by wearing it in the form of a chain. Even today, many people like firstname lastname and firstname lastname of city show off their personality and their class by displaying shining strands of this attractive precious metal; and whether the links are very large and bulky or thin and exceptionally fine, gold chains have a way of enhancing a person's beauty and personality.
Gold chains of 24 karat or 22 karat are made by creating quite small, sometimes very delicate, golden links that are then connected to each other.
There are some very complex weaves like Basic Single Loop-in-Loop, Multiple Woven Double, Basic Pinched Loop, Multiple Soldered Pinched Loop, Basic Double Loop-in-Loop, Tapered Two-Way Double Loop-in-Loop Bracelet, Multiple Soldered Double, Centerball Single, while some are simple. One attractive type of gold chain is formed of a rectangular link that twists to lie flat, with no visible space at all between the links.
Gold chains are a favorite gift, and unlike other forms of jewelry like rings and bracelets are not necessarily gender specific. Look for a very light weave of gold chain if you are shopping for a lady, and on the other hand a thicker, more blunt weave if you are shopping for a gentleman. Of course, remember that more important than the gender of the person you are shopping for is their sense of fashion; get them something that matches the jewelry that they already own.
When you are out to buy gold chains, keep the karat information in mind. The higher the karat value, the more pure gold is in the chain. 12 karat gold is thus less pure than 24 karat gold, though this can be a plus in some cases. 24 karat gold is the purest gold that you can get, and while it is very heavy, it is also quite soft. If you are worried about durability, 14 karat gold might be a somewhat better choice. One of the reasons why people purchase gold jewelry is because it has a low nickel content. If you have a nickel allergy, make sure that the gold you get is relatively pure. If you are especially sensitive, stay away from gold that is 10 carat, as even this might trigger your allergy.
You will also have your choice of various colors of gold. The color of gold is usually affected by what they have used to alloy it with. White gold has a sheen not unlike silver or platinum, while rose gold has a lovely feminine pink tone to it. Pure gold is, of course, usually seen as a rich yellow.
As you can see, there are many things to remember when you are shopping for a gold chain, whether it is for you or a loved one. Keep your eyes peeled, though and soon enough, you'll find the perfect one!

3 Things Etsy Could Do to Make My Shop Run Smoother - Etsy Forum

Posted in Etsy's Idea Forum today... my pipe dreams:

1. I would just about give my right arm for a little more functionality on the backside of my shop. The combination of doing 90% custom/personalized work coupled with the 40% chance that a buyer will give me all required info in notes to seller is making me cuck0_0.

Etsy, I would kill for a little fly out box or note ability by each order so that I can keep up with who I'm waiting on, who I've contacted about payment, and extra details that need to be attached to the order.

2. A listing section that can be bulk edited to add timely promotion info, custom order lead time, instructions, etc. Since we can do a bulk edit on shipping profiles, could we add this?

3. A customizable intro to Conversations so I can remind customers (existing and new) what info I need when they're inquiring. I get so many vague convos that could be converted into sales if I could give the customer some info up front like:

I need to know what you want, what size, what time frame, where I'm shipping to, etc...

(Yes, I know there's Alchmey, but Alchemy is too cumbersome for my needs.)

Thank you for listening!

Gold Jewelry - A Great Investment

Getting the hang of investing can be daunting. There are hundreds of events that can change the worth of an investment that most people are too scared to invest in anything, but instead they simply let their money sit in a bank account. If you are really thinking about investing or are trying to decide what you really should put down your money in, consider this: Gold Jewelry.
========================================
That's gold, that's what it makes of us. Never knew a prospector yet that died rich. Make one fortune, you're sure to blow it in trying to find another. I'm no exception to the rule. Aw sure, I'm an odd old bone now, but say, don't you guys think the spirit's gone. I'm all set to shoulder a pickax and a shovel any time anybody's willing to share expenses. I'd rather go by myself. Going it alone's the best way. But you got to have a stomach for loneliness. Some guys go nutty with it. On the other hand, going with a partner or two is dangerous. Murder's always lurkin' about. Partners accusin' each other of all sorts of crimes. Aw, as long as there's no find, the noble brotherhood will last, but when the piles of gold begin to grow, that's when the trouble starts. - The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
========================================

Gold Price Trends

Gold values have been increasing dramatically ever since about 2004 when the price of gold spiked. The value of gold is increasing even more dramatically in the USA because on and off the value of the American dollar has been sinking. As the dollar drops, gold increases. Gold?s value consistently increases as gold becomes more and more rare. A significant reason that gold values stay even (if not on the rise) is that, if something unusual happened to make the price of gold dropped, the companies that produce gold just stop operating for a bit, with the result that the demand for gold bumps up again as expected. The price of gold, unlike other investments, does not always appreciate and depreciate with the stock market.

24 Karat ? The Best Investment

Many gold owners feel that twenty four karat gold is by far the best gold investment to make. Twenty four karat jewelry is the purest gold in the jewelry line. It is most commonly in a yellow gold color. Twenty four karat gold is the best quality investment, especially if you want to to invest especially in gold jewelry, because the highest purity that gold jewelry can be obtained in is in is twenty four karat. That is the purest gold that is made into jewelry, so you won?t be able to find gold jewelry that is more valuable than twenty four karat.

Pros and Cons of Gold Jewelry as an Investment

Just like any other investment, there are good and bad points when it comes to investing in gold jewelry. The upside is, as you would expect, that gold is about the most stable thing you can invest in. You don?t have to worry about what the stock market is doing; you don?t have to pay attention to the Dow Jones Index. All you must do is keep your jewelry in a safe place. Of course, keeping your jewelry in good condition can be challenging, and there is no guarantee that the value of the jewelry will hold up as well as investing in pure gold will. It could go up faster as gold bars. The highest karat of gold available in jewelry form is twenty four karat and that being that it can be damaged.
Figuring out what to invest in is not a piece of cake, especially if you are new to the fields of investing and advanced financial management. The good news about investing in gold jewelry is that the price of gold almost never goes down and even if it does, it increases before too long. Gold is one of the most stable things you can put your money in because it decidedly appreciates in value.

Cameos are cut from stones, such as onyx, sardonix or agate, where different colors occur in layers. The background material is cut away, leaving the cameo design in relief. Onyx is also used in intaglios because its layers can be cut to show a color contrast between the design and the background.

Clarity suggests the purity in the stone. If you notice virtually any splits, chips, dark-colored flecks or feathering on the stone for sale to you personally, don’t buy it. Cut, conversely, is the element of the diamond that establishes its brilliance. It’s not dependant on the form of the stone but rather by the placement of the stone’s facets. There is a purity certification that you can refer to when purchasing diamonds. When an F is mentioned, it means that the stone is flawless. A VVS indicates very, very slightly included while VS means very slightly included. If you see an SI it means slightly included while I means included.
Carat is used for the weight of the gemstone. With regards to color, diamonds come in yellow, white or brown. Clear stones set in diamond jewelry are the most expensive of all.

Amethyst gemstone

Amethyst gemstone Chemistry Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz; its chemical formula is SiO2. In the 19th century, the color of amethyst was attributed to the presence of manganese. However, since it is capable of being greatly altered and even discharged by heat, the color was believed by some authorities to be from an organic source. Ferric thiocyanate was suggested, and sulfur was said to have been detected in the mineral.

More recent work has shown that amethyst's coloration is due to ferric iron impurities. Further study has shown a complex interplay of iron and aluminium is responsible for the color.

On exposure to heat, amethyst generally becomes yellow, and much of the citrine, cairngorm, or yellow quartz of jewelry is said to be merely "burnt amethyst". Veins of amethystine quartz are apt to lose their color on the exposed outcrop

Synthetic amethyst is made to imitate the best quality amethyst. Its chemical and physical properties are so similar to that of natural amethyst that it can not be differentiated with absolute certainty without advanced gemological testing (which is often cost-prohibitive). There is one test based on "Brazil law twinning" (a form of quartz twinning where right and left hand quartz structures are combined in a single crystal) which can be used to identify synthetic amethyst rather easily. In theory however it is possible to create this material synthetically as well, but this type is not available in large quantities in the market. Composition

Amethyst is composed of an irregular superposition of alternate lamellae of right-handed and left-handed quartz. It has been shown that this structure may be due to mechanical stresses.

Because it has a hardness of seven on the Mohs scale, amethyst is suitable for use in jewelry.Hue and tone Amethyst occurs in primary hues from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple. Amethyst may exhibit one or both secondary hues, red and blue. The ideal grade is called "Deep Siberian" and has a primary purple hue of around 75–80%, 15–20% blue and (depending on the light source) red secondary hues.Green quartz is sometimes called green amethyst. Other names for green quartz are prasiolite, vermarine or lime citrine. History

Amethyst was used as a gemstone by the ancient Egyptians and was largely employed in antiquity for intaglio engraved gems.

The Greeks believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle – the reason for this being that amethysts are believed to heal people and keep them cool-headed.[citation needed] Beads of amethyst were found in Anglo-Saxon graves in England.

A large geode, or "amethyst-grotto", from near Santa Cruz in southern Brazil was presented at the 1902 exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany. Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for February.

Pearls - Fresh Water or Salt Water

Pearls are produced in both salt and fresh water, but the difference is astounding.  Usually, the salt water variety of pearls are of a better quality and are also more expensive than pearls found in salt water; however, the choice between fresh water and salt water pearls is completely personal.

For starters, pearls are made from shellfish.  When an irritant, such as a piece of sand, invades the delicate lining of the creature, it secretes a smooth substance to coat the irritant, thus creating a pearl.  Salt water and fresh water pearls are both made in the same fashion.  This substance, known as nacre or mother of pearl, slowly builds up the irritant until a pearl is formed.

The main difference between salt water pearls and fresh water pearls is the type of create that produces this natural gemstone.  Salt water pearls are produced by oysters that inhabit the seas and oceans.  In days past, the only way to harvest salt water pearls was to dive to tremendous depths to recover the oysters.  Today, these oysters are grown in farms, but the pearls produced are of supremely high quality.

Fresh water pearls are produced by mussels that burrow in the sandy bottoms of rivers, lakes, and streams.  Like salt water pearls, the mussels that produce fresh water pearls are also farmed.  In most places, “hunting” mussels to harvest their pearls is illegal due to the havoc it can cause on the ecosystem.

One can immediately tell the difference between a fresh water and salt water pearl by its appearance.  Whereas salt water pearls are—or should be—completely round, fresh water pearls have a lumpy, potato-like shape.  Usually, fresh water pearls are described as off-round, egg, or Baroque, and come with a more affordable price tag due to this irregular shape.

The colors of fresh water pearls encompass the entire rainbow.  While salt water pearls come in a wide array of colors, fresh water pearls usually take on the hue of the mussel’s shell.  Fresh water pearls can range from the traditional white, cream, and pink to more unusual shades like lavender, and copper.  Although these latter colors tend to raise the price on fresh water pearls, the color of choice is purely at the whim of the buyer.

Many potential pearl buyers have the common misconception that the fresh water pearl is not “real.”  This is completely untrue, as both the fresh water and the salt water pearl are equally authentic.  The choice between the two depends on the tastes and the budget of the wearer.  Some individuals enjoy the irregular Baroque shapes and special colors of the fresh water, where others want the classic white round offerings of the salt water pearl.

Pearl jewelry gemstones Pearl

Pearl jewelry Gemstones Pearl
Pearl symbolizes love, success, and happiness.
Color: The color of pearls varies with the mollusk and its environment. It ranges from black to white, with the rose of Indian pearls esteemed most. Other colors are cream, gray, blue, yellow, lavender, green, and mauve. All occur in delicate shades.
Cultured pearls are being produced in virtually every color of the rainbow.
Description: The chief component of the nacre that constitutes the pearl is aragonite CaCO. Pearls are formed by a mollusk consisting of the same material (called nacre, or mother-of-pearl) as the mollusk's shell. It is a highly valued gemstone.
The shell-secreting cells of the mollusk are located in the mantleof its body. When a foreign particle penetrates the mantle, the cells attach to the particle and build up more or less concentric layers of pearl around it. Irregularly shaped pearls called baroque pearls are those that have grown in muscular tissue. Pearls that grow adjacent to the shell are often flat on one side and are called blister pearls.
Pearls are characterized by their translucence and lustre and by a delicate play of surface color called orient. The more perfect its shape (spherical or droplike) and the deeper its lustre, the greater its value. Only those pearls produced by mollusks whose shells are lined with mother-of-pearl (e.g., certain species of both saltwater oysters and freshwater clams) are really fine pearls. Pearls from other mollusks are reddish or whitish, porcellaneous, or lacking in pearly lustre.
The surface of a pearl is rough to the touch. Pearls come in a wide range of sizes. Those weighing less than 1/4 grain (1 pearl grain = 50 milligrams = 1/4 carat) are called seed pearls. The largest naturally occurring pearls are the baroque pearls; one such pearl is known to have weighed 1,860 grains.
Cultured pearl is natural but cultivated pearl produced by a mollusk after the intentional introduction of a foreign object inside the creature's shell.
Birthstone: Pearl and cultured pearl along with alexandrite and moonstone are birthstones of Gemini (Twins): May 21 - June 21.
Wedding anniversary: Freshwater Pearl is the anniversary gemstone for the 1st year of marriage;
Pearl is the anniversary gemstone for the 12th and 30th year of marriage.
Varieties: Jewelers commonly refer to saltwater pearls as Oriental pearls and to those produced by freshwater mollusks as freshwater pearls.
Care and treatment: Pearls are less durable than most gems. They are sensitive to acids, dryness, and humidity. If you wear cosmetics, perfume or a hair spray, put these on before wearing your pearl jewelry. When taking off your pearls, wipe them with a dry, lint-free cloth. If needed, clean your pearls with warm soapy water being very careful to not get water into the drill hole as the pearl may discolor. Dry your pearls flat on an absorbant soft (preferably lint-free) towel.
