Find wonderful tips on buying gemstone jewelry below as well as on every gemstone page.

Tips on Buying Gemstones

Gemstones have been sought after and treasured throughout history. They have been found in ruins dating several thousand years. They are valued as gifts symbolizing love.

Generally, the price of any gemstone is determined by: size, cut, quality (color/clarity/treatments), and type. Here are some questions to ask about quality:

Has it been treated? (See treatments listed below)

Is the stone natural or synthetic?

Are there any noticeable scratches, chips or inclusions?

Is the color even throughout the stone?

How good is the color? (Is it vivid?)

If you are buying the stones for earrings or cufflinks, are the stones well matched?

There are many ways that dealers treat gemstones. The savvy buyer asks lots of questions and hopefully tests the results. Here are some treatments to look for:

Irradiation: It is common to irradiate Aquamarine, London Blue Topaz, Emerald, and Diamond as well as other stones. This treatment brings out color and removes imperfections. Many dealers know if the stones they are selling have been irradiated. Honest ones will tell you if they are aware of the treatment.

Heat Treatment: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Ruby, Tanzanite and Topaz are often heated at high temperatures to enhance color.

Dye: This is the most common treatment used. On clear stones, dye may be visible in cracks that are darker than the rest of the stone. Sometimes dye appears as a residue that rubs off or white patches. Lapis and Rose Quartz are commonly dyed. Amethyst and Citrine are often dyed. Black Onyx is permanently dyed in normal processing.

Coatings: Jasper is often dipped in petroleum products to bring out color and to seal it. Emerald is oiled; turquoise is waxed.

Fake stones: Some dealers will try passing off fake stones instead of natural ones. There are fake stones for most gemstones on the market. Always ask what stone something is if you are not certain. Honest dealers will tell you. If a stone looks too perfect it may be fake, irradiated or dyed. I avoid Laboratory made products are known as synthetics.

Tips on buying beads

Good sized holes (so can use a stronger thread)

Evenly shaped beads (as appropriate)

If the beads are being sold in a 16" strand -- I make sure it is 16" -- not 14" or 15" if possible.

Look for the best quality stone (if buying real stones)

Make sure beads are not cracked or chipped by the holes as this tears the thread

Good color (so can create harmonious necklaces and matching earrings)

Zircon Jewelry

Zircon is a natural stone often used to imitate diamonds. It is often confused with cubic zirconia which is a synthetic stone. Often Zircon is used as a replacement for diamonds. It was often used before diamonds became so popular. Currently, blue zircon is much more popular than white or clear zircon.

Zircon Care, Treatments & Where

Zircon is a natural stone - not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia which is manmade. It is known as a colorless stone used to imitate diamonds but also comes in: blue, yellow, orange, red, brown and green . It has a hardness of 7.5.

Zircon is somewhat soft so avoid scratches and sharp blows. Avoid hot water and household chemicals.

Brown Zicon is usually heat treated to change them to colorless or blue Zircon. Blue stones that revert to brown will regain the blue if reheated. Blue Zircon reheated in the presence of oxygen will change to a golden yellow.

Zircon will have more wear on its facets than diamond. Zircon is imitated by colorless glass and synthetic spinel.

Zircon is found in Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, France, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

    Buy This So I Won't-Volume 6 - Puppets

It's that time again, time for me to tempt you with hand-crafty goodness that's hanging out on my I Would Buy This If I Didn't Also Have to Eat list. Those of you who are familiar with my shop know that I'm a big fan of Little Red Riding Hood, and that's despite the fact that she runs me ragged through the streets of NYC. I can forgive her for that because Manhattan is an exciting place. But it does get old after awhile when I have to rescue her from one perilous situation after another.

In order to do this post tonight, I've taken her to an secure and undisclosed location because, dear reader, I have to confess that while Red and I are so BFF, I'm a wee bit infatuated with her arch nemesis. You know how irresistible bad boys can be, right?

    *sigh*

So without further ado, let me introduce you to this week's candidate for Buy This So I Won't hailing from the Etsy shop burchanddaughters, The Big Bad Wolf.

    In drag.

Now, I know what you're thinking. Cross-dressing is no big deal in 2009. We're a modern society; we just elected Barack Obama; we don't care if a Big Bad Wolf needs to work out his Mother issues in a pink bonnet, we celebrate it! If he doesn't want to embrace his inner metro-wolf and do away with that uni-brow, then good for him! Teeth whitening? Ha! Over-rated! Cover that gray? Are you mad? Leave him alone! Hasn't he suffered enough? He's already doomed to live his life as someone's puppet!

...And yet there's a soft, squishy part of me that wants to buy him, bring him home, make him comfortable on my uncomfortable sofa and sit across from him with a legal pad and just listen to his wolfly woes. But then I'd have to leave Red with Alice in Wonderland, and I don't think I could bear the separation anxiety. Some days she's the only reason I get out of bead in the morning. So, I beseech you as I type, to Buy This So I Won't, to give this brave, brazen, Big Bad Wolf a home free of conflicted little red riding girls and grandmas, and with that I'm off to rescue Red before Alice offers her something to drink...

    Have a good week, Lori

    Coral Jewelry

Coral is created by marine life. It is beautiful in rings, necklaces, and pendants. It is especially popular in Native American Indian style jewelry.

    Coral Care, Treatments & Where
Coral is created by sea life. It is the skeletal remains of coral polyps. Red, pink, and white coral is mostly calcium carbonate. Black and golden coral is conchiolin. It has a hardness of 3.

Coral is especially fragile. Protect coral from scratches and sharp blows. Also avoid large temperature changes (such as leaving it be a heater vent or in a hot car). Do not clean coral in a home ultrasonic cleaner.

Coral is often imitated by plastic, glass, porcelain, and stained bone. Natural coral has a distinctive wood grain texture which can help identify it as the real thing. White coral is often bleached to brighten its color. Other colors may be dyed.

Coral is found on the African coasts, Australia, Japan, Mediterranean coasts, Malaysia, and the West Indies.
